Rest in peace, Grumpy
From all the guys and girls in the Silgrad Tower team. I'm sure you already have access to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on your cloud in Heaven, and are having the time of your life.

Grumpy
I really can't believe this. It seems like just yesterday- literally, it was -that I downloaded my first mod, coincidently, made by Grumpy. I greatly enjoyed it, and I'm very sorry we won't be recieving any more.

The Morrowind Mod Community has lost one of it's best.

2005-06-27 21:03:56

Thank You
I am one of those folks Grumpy mentioned who can't mod, but I really love the game Morrowind. I downloaded his mods as well of most mods that were and are available. All who put in this great effort are truly appreciated.

I never new or corresponded with any of you, but what you guys have done is amazing. You have made a great game even greater. I was totally amazed when I viewed the latest trailers of Glory Road.

I will miss Grumpy too.

Please accept my thank you.

His own words...
I just re-read a chat Dennis and I were having way back in february. At that point, we knew his cancer was terminal, but we still believed that we would play and mod for Oblivionn together.

I found a quote from him in that chat that I felt I wanted to share with you, as it was so typical for him :):
Grumpy: In a way, the individual is not as important as the masses. Think for a second of someone who is in my position and cant mod, but enjoys the game. We have improved that person's life. In a small way maybe, but we did it just the same...

That's the trophy... That's what makes it all worthwhile...

Biggest kick I get is when some "user" posts on the forums a "thank-you".

Whether they mention something you've done or not, it makes a difference.

Like the other day: There was a person who lost a mod and wanted it back. House mod in Balmora, and three of the responses mentioned Asgard. Not important that this individual was looking for that particular mod, but the fact that three people mentioned the mod was... to me anyway. I made somebody's life a little better.

Not by much... I understand that, but a little is better than nothing...

I did something to improve somebody's well-being...

Allbeit small...
Sorry I am late Grumpy
It is a shock and a sad time, I must be honest I only found out because I was looking for another of his masterpieces.

It gives me a heavy heart and a large disbelieve that one of the Modders finest is gone.

Thankyou Grumpy for all your great work, and thankyou Emma for ensuring we can all say our final goodbyes to Grumpy.

Grumpy R.I.P
I never really knew Grumpy.....only through the teleport companion scripts he made...but I give his family and friends my condolences. I'm sorry that he passed. God has a plan for us all. Grumpy/Dennis finished his mission and it was time for him to go. Let's hope that he has a greater life above....

From a Morrowind fan all the

Farewell to a wonderful modder....
This is indeed sad news. I cannot say that I knew him personally or that I've even spoke to him briefly on the forums or anything, but his work is fantastic and I will take the word of everyone who has spoken for his personality and character. Clearly, this is a huge loss in many respects. My condolences to his family and friends. Farewell, "Grumpy".

Goodbye Dennis
And thank you.

I never knew you but your creativity was a welcome source of entertainment on many an evening.

My condolences to the Dennis' family.

Farren, Johannesburg, 2005-06-26 03:14:21

I don't even know what to say
I just found out about Dennis' passing and it came as a total shock. I've not been active in the Morrowind community for some time and had I known he had terminal cancer, I would have made more effort to stay in touch with him, but I guess I took for granted that he and everyone else would always be around and I had all the time in the world to speak with them. :(

Though I wasn't nearly as close to him as some like Emma, I consider it a priviledge that I did know him, or rather his online persona, personally to some degree. I must echo the sentiments that he was a kind, giving person who always showed respect to others and listened to them, which sounds like such an obvious and simple thing, but I'm constantly suprised by how few people are truly good listeners.

Unlike many in the community, and I must sadly include myself here, he didn't get caught up in the drama or fame or any of that sort of thing which was so common and such an easy trap to fall into. Dennis was the quintessential modder, what ever modder for any game SHOULD be, someone who created for the purpose of sharing and giving enjoyment and help to others and nothing more.

More importantly than that though, he was a person with intergrity and I consider myself lucky to have known him. My sincere condolences to Dennis' sister. He was a good man and he won't be forgotten as a person and also through his work.

I know that often times people marginalize internet relationships but as far as I am concerned they are no less real or less important than any other sort of relationships. If someone has touched someone's life in some way, then it matters little what means of communication they used to do it. I think it's pretty clear through reading this guest book that Dennis has touched many peoples' lives in some way even those he did not know.

Farewell
I never spoke to Grumpy and only know of him through his work. Im not a member of any modders community or post on any board, just a fan. I know very little about him, I just think his work was simply brilliant.

Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace.

Grumpy
Oh man, this sucks. Grumpy was a really cool guy and even better modder. He helped me get some of his mods working. His work was outstanding and will stand the tests of time. He didn't just leave fun and entertaining mods for us to use, he left an entire legacy to his talent, skills, and artistic views.
Rest in peace Grumpy, and know that your work will forever remain alive, working, and praised be generations of Morrowind players to come.

Andrey

Grump's Death
Grumpy produced many great mods and was a great person (from what others tell me). May his mods prosper and strive to be templates for the modders who use them. Grumpy will be well remembered in the hearts of Morrowind players everywhere. RIP Grumpy.

Unexpected
I never known Grumpy personally, i never talked to him via forums, email or chat. I have only downloaded his mods. I've seen immediately that he had the gift to work with simplicity. That's why i 've always loved his works. I will miss you.

To Dennis,
My sincere condolences to Dennis' family, and to his other friends.

When I first joined the Elder Scrolls forums so long ago, Dennis and Emma were among the very first to welcome me there, and they were two of the first to play and compliment me on my first Companion mod. Over the years, we have had some wonderful times together - discussions of Companions, conversations about life, and generally getting to know each other.

His "Grumpy" avatar was a sign of his magnificent sense of irony - because Dennis was always the soul of graciousness, courtesy, helpfulness, and generosity in all of his dealings with others on the forums. And he could spice up the driest topic with wit and charm.

Because of him, the world is a happier place than it would have been otherwise.

I haven't been able to write in this book before because of browser problems. In a way, that's a good thing, because I have had a chance to read these 17 pages of touching and heartfelt posts first. They put me in mind of the end of "The Wizard of Oz", when the Wizard tells the Tin Man, "A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others".

Rest In Peace, my friend. You are very much loved by many, many others.

Vorwoda the Black

May his memory be eternal
Grumpy to me was one more amongst all modders who spent a lot of time working for us to enjoy their work for free, often without even looking or acknowledging the person behind the "mask".

My heart goes out however to all who cared, and especially to Emma for setting up this guestbook. (Hello, it's me, Pi!) Cancer is also present in my family and I can only begin to envisage how difficult it must have been.

May Christ have mercy on him and place him in a place of repose.

Thank you again to Emma and to all who cared enough to make not only the mods a reality for us, but love part of their own reality.

Although many of us have not known you personally, death touches us all. We all belonged in the same community, and we met wonderous people. It seems silly to know you only for the wonderful contributions that you made through modding, but thankyou regardless. to live out your death is a beautiful thing, and I wish you the best in whatever plain of existance you are in, or occupation you hold.

Grumpy
I never knew Grumpy personally. Like many others, my knowledge of the man came from his wonderful mods and his posts in topics I read on TES Forums.
What I do know is that the community has lost a wonderfully talented person, one of the few who genuinely revolutionised modding.
I wish I had known him.
My heart goes out to his friends and family. He will be sorely missed, and he will never be forgotten.

Requiescat In Pace Grumpy

I know you have found your way to the place where you will be happiest. The amount of people's lives you have touched with your wonderful creations is testament enough to your generosity and kindness (in complete opposition to the title Grumpy).

I only hope that the happiness can soon return to those who are pained by their loss of one of the best people they may have ever known.

Take care, Grumpy.
Take care, Everyone.

A little goodbye...
I've just found out about Grumpy's passing, and though I didn't personally know him, he was a very dear member of Morrowind's community and from all I've read, a great person. It's always a terrible and sad moment when we lose someone we care about, but I like to think that nothing is final, and that he is in peace right now.

May you rest peacefully, Grunmpy,

For Grumpy.
My ES forum name is Anghardel67, and I wasn't very close to Grumpy. As a matter of fact, we spoke only a few times. However, I enjoyed his companion mods greatly; downloading them meant that I played with a little piece of the modder's making. These companions will stick with me, even though Grumpy is gone.

The few times I did speak with him, he was exceptionally nice and knew exactly how to help me as best he could, whether it was for one thing or another. He was one of my many modding inspirations, and I thank him greatly for creating many of the plugins which are now cemented into the games of Morrowind that I infrequently play.

Grumpy won't ever be forgotten. I've seen the support given, upon his death. He will live on, close to those who knew him, and still remembered by those of us who did not.

Stephen Carlock.

Selfless
It says a lot about a man,
when he hasn't got much time,
that he gives it freely
to even the least of aquaintances.

Never too busy to help another,
no matter the price of each moment.
It was never "too much trouble"
to be a teacher, to be a helper.

It speaks volumes about a man,
to leave such a legacy of generosity.
...For when time is all you have
and there's not much left to spare,
it means that much more to those left behind
That he took the time to share.

Safe passage, Grumpy
Grumpy is an icon of what is best in the Elder Scrolls community. In one way, what he has contributed to modding will be a living testimony to his generosity, creativity and kind nature.

I hope Grumpy's family can take at least some small comfort in knowing how many people he touched. Folks may see TES as just 'games', but it is easy to see that the richness of the community - which Grumpy is so much a part of - is something that contributes to the well-being of the planet by embracing and encouranging our diversity within unity.

Thank you, Grumpy.

Goodbye
Thank you, Grumpy, and goodbye. See you in a better world where intelligence and generosity are really rewarded.

Grumpy
His contributions and helpful hints (not to mention his ironic and sarcastic humor) will be sorely missed at the Elder Scrolls Forums and wherever else he posted online. But the biggest lose will be to his family and friends, may the greaving process be over with soon. And the journey continues...

Grumpy, we will miss you
Everyone that has ever had any contact with "Grumpy" knew the avatar and nickname did not fit him. In a society where most people hide behind the monitor and keyboard to be rude and obnoxious, his was a voice of true generosity adn willingness to share and to assist. We will definately miss you Grumpy, and I am sure I was not the only one looking forward to seeing what you could do with the Oblivion construction set. I think we would have been amazed all over again. Thank you for everything you did for the MW community.

Condolences
My condolences go to his family and his friends, to everybody else who knew him and to the Morrowind community. I posted a link to Emma's web site over in the Gamespot union created for players of Morrowind to increase the awareness of his contributions and the loss of his active partcipation.

Farewell
Although I didn't knew him personally either, the news shocked me. I still remember some of his helpful postings in the old forums, and remember how astonished I was at his avatar on the one side - and at his patient and respectful postings on the other. May Grumpy be an example to all of us.

My condolences go to his family and his friends, to everybody else who knew him and to the Morrowind community, which lost one of its pioneers.

Farewell
Sad news indeed. My sympathies are with everyone that knew him, one way or another, through his work or in person. May he rest in peace and his memory live on.

Goodbye Friend.....
Dennis might be gone but there is a little part of him in almost every companion mod that you care to mention. So each time you play with your favourite companion spare a thought for our departed good Friend....

Rest In Peace Grumpy

~R.I.P., Grumpy
While I never knew him, I've always been a fan of some of his mods, Claymore Emporium in particular. Rest in Peace, Grumpy. May you be always remembered, and your work always cherished.

To a creative architect of true beauty
To the memory of my friend Grumpy, one of the kindest, most generous person I have known

He was an imaginative creator of heavenly beauty

Through hard time I would visit the dream castle he had created and it would give warmth to my hearth

I have known Dennis (Grumpy) since long before I released any mods, as he was the first modder I ever contacted, to thanks him for his wonderfull Asgard, a mod that was a real joy to my hearth during hard time.

He was always supportive of everyone's creations and always a creative, inventive and artistic modder

He had a way to twist Morrowind architecture in unexpected ways.

He was definitivly the kindest individual I had known.

I can simply hope he passed to a better place and that the heaven he enter will be as beautifull as the heaven he created for us.

I will keep him in memory forever, close to my hearth

We do not say goodbye to you, Grumpy... You still
It is already told so many words, that to me remains to add only the little, but in all sincerity... I long time watched for mods Grumpy, from which always cast warm-heartedness and sincerity. About its illness I have learned the last autumn and at heart sincerely hoped for recover... And now it would be desirable to trust, that in the best world, in about what it can be secretly and not realizing dreamed, creating the small worlds, including in showers people, in the plugins. Unfortunately, I not so well write in English, but it would be desirable to write a poem in conclusion of my words, devoting to its light memory Grumpy which so perfectly sounds in Russian, that having translated though the rhyme will be lost, but the sense will not grow gim:

Yes there will be light in your window,
Yes there will be a world in your soul.
Let pleasure of the sun without borders
Ñèÿåò happiness each instant.
Gifts of the sky, stars, the grounds...
Accept all heart their gifts,
Also listen to voices of centuries,-
Them ïåñíü sounds through noise of winds.
In the huge world the life rages,
But your stream is hidden and silent,
It is learned by us always-
In ìîë÷àíüè nights, light, day.
You will hear a sound calling in a distance.
That voice will cause grief,
But the sound conducts you on call-
Saying goodbye to the past, you are ready?

Farewell Grumpy
How strange to mourn someone I have only known by his work and as a fellow modder on the forums, yet this news of his passing deeply saddens me. Farewell, then, Grumpy, we will remember you.

Farewell:
This loss leaves an ache in the hearts of so many. A kind gentleman who inspired so many of us to tackle what we felt was the impossible. You will be missed.

Rest in peace Grumpy
I'm like many who only knew Grumpy from his work, (I 've got a couple of his mods downloaded) We admire his work and skill, and that "extra" something he brought to the game. Also, according to Emma, he was only a couple of months younger than myself. Things like this make you stop and think about what makes up a life a little more. His memory will live in his mods.

Goodbye, Grumpy...
Grumpy made the world of Morrowind brighter and with his companion-scripts he showed, that we had not to go alone through all these adventures.
And when I read all the farewells I know that he made not only the world of Morrowind a better place but this world we live in, too.
Through his work he will be in the mind of many, many people forever. A little piece of eternity. And he deserves it.

Adieu
Grumpy's Nord Female Cally saved my characters' bacon on more occasions than I care to count. The sweetest aspect of that mod was the ability after a while to "quit worrying and fussing" over the companion. They were always there.

Now Grumpy, whom many of us felt would "always be there" is gone.

My father died from cancer when I was nine. I am deeply sympathetic at news of Grumpy's passing.

Adieu, adieu.
Sadly, and with great and longlasting admiration,

To You, Grumpy,
You were very good in modding,
You were always a good person to laugh with and you were always very kind when I was bothering you with the stupidest question

I'm really proud of having known you a bit and that you fought until the end......

 to you Grumpy, may you rest in peace but not be forgotten

Goodbye Grumpy. I didn't know you all that well, but I love your mods.

Rest in peace
Though I came to to the mod community fairly recently and never had the chance to meet Grumpy, the news of his passing is a very sore blow indeed. I have seen his name spoken all over the mod forums, and his and emma's companion mods are legendary. From the way he was spoken of, he become this "modding god" in my mind, an icon. Reading this guestbook and his memorial thread in the mod forums was amazing. He finally became a person to me, and even though I never had the chance to meet him, these parting word from the community reflects his soul through the people who's lives (and games!) he has touched.

As was said before, his mods made morrowind a less lonely place and will forever remain a testement to his generous spirit.

So huge so hopless to conceive
As these that twice befell.
Parting is all we know of heaven
And all we need of hell

~Emily Dickinson

Rest in peace Grumpy and godspeed.

Farewell!
Farewell Grumpy! You have walked down a road on which we cannot follow you yet, but I am sure it has led you to a better place. May you rest in that place in peace, traveller, and who knows, maybe the road will also lead you back one day? However it might be, you and your kindness to others will not be forgotten! Goodbye, Grumpy, goodbye.....

It was with great sadness...
... that I read of Grumpy having passed away. My deepest feelings of compassion to all those who knew him personally.
I am very thankful to Grumpy:
By pioneering the "Partner Scripts" for home made mods Grumpy added a dimension of human care to a game which would otherwise have been too simply about a single heroine / hero hacking her /his way ahead thru a mostly hostile environment.
If somebody sets about adding partners and even elements of romance into a game like morrowind he tells a lot about the great social abilities deeply anchored into his soul.

Greetings, Mewgull

Goodbye
Unfortunatley, I never had the pleasure of having a discussion with him, but I have admired all his work, from his companions, to his mod installation guide from the Official Forums some years ago, which first made me open the CS.

The community has lost a great man.
