I Remember
I remember a long time ago, back when the forums were on a different website, back when the new forums hadn't even been thought up yet, we had held a conversation, and while I can't remember what we said or what the specific topic was, I do remember a few things. One was the obvious want to mod and help others mod as well that was contained in every sentence. The second thing I remember was your kindness. I remember that you helped me with a problem I was having with a long-forgotten mod and you even taught me a few things about the CS and scripting. Your posts on the forums, old and new alike, were always entertaining and inspiring. Dennis, everyone, including the folks who never spoke to you or never knew you, has loved your contributions to the modding world and to our never-fading memories. A year ago I was mourning your passing. Now I am celebrating your life and your work. Because of your never-ending love for the game I can enjoy the companions that would have never been without you. Thank you so much.

Rest in Peace,
-Evan

I never expected to not be able to say hullo
It seems that there's never enough words, nor enough time, to tell the people that mean so much to us exactly how we feel. I'll give him a pat on the back another day, share a virtual pint and talk about the way things are and the way things ought to be.

Two years I was gone, expecting life to be much the same when I returned as it was when I left. This is one of the harder things to greet my return. It's the one I just can seem to wrap my head around and the one that hovers like a moth at the edge of everything else.

Thank you for our conversations, Grumpy. Thank you for always answering my inane questions with a wink and helping hand. Thank you for always being there for the people that looked up to you in effort and action. In a world as ephemeral and transient as our virtual communities, you gave us a moral terra paved with honesty and enduring enthusiasm. I miss you, Grumpy.

A good man
Having Grumpy's work all over my morrowind, and now learning of his unfortunate passing, I have posted this condolences for a man who i did not have to meet to know that he was a good man:

There are those who are good men only by tongue, but others who are good men by action. Grumpy has proven his virtue by action. His generoscity has been displayed by his many works and also by his templates for use by fellow players/modders.

The angels await one of their own
Rest easy Grumpy

Grumpy
You made Vvardenfell a better place to be.

PeeWee, malmö, 2006-06-04 13:39:14

I hope you dwell peacefully in the summerlands
Grumpy.

I had heard the name again and again as I searched and downloaded Morrowind mods (having returned to Morrowind after a brief fling with Oblivion).

His impact on the community is evident. I am so saddened to learn of his passing, but his work lives on. He influences many people -- still. Perhaps that is the best memorial of all.

Farewell ... and thanks.
I just find out today that he died at the exact day my twin girls were born.

We will remember you, Grumpy.

Thanks
I didn't know about this until recently when I looked for some mods he helped make, he did great work, and we should be proud of him, because even though he passed away, he has left a legacy for the MW community, and we will always remember you Grumpy.

Sabre, 2006-06-01 15:17:58

Farewell good grumpy
Grumpy was a great modder, it is always sad when people die... so much he did for our lovely community. He made it a much better place with some of the best mods seen,

Farewell, Grupy

Wonderful work!
I avoided mods for 5 years, but lately I thought my empty wallet looked sad, since Oblivion is out of the question right now. After playing a bit without them, I started combing the net for these enhancements and couldn't believe what had happened while I was out of it! The full texture sets are truly amazing! One called Ultimate complete is nothing short of staggering! Things that change the gameplay for a better challenge and balance in the game are second. And then probably The Children of Morrowind mod. It's exceptional as it is, but I hope it gets more developement! Anyway, I think Children is what led me to this site and learning of the loss in the modding community.

I can imagine how fans of Grumpy's work feel after enjoying his work over the years. I'm sorry I missed out for so long. But his efforts will extend MW's life into the future and I'm proud to have a few of his (and Emma's) enhancements running on my copy now. After I get things running smooth I'll start a new character and take note when Grumpy's work pops up in the game.

James, Georgia, 2006-04-17 13:37:12

Farewell...
I know this is late, very late, but I don't care, I'm going to write it anyway.

Like Douglas Adams said in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, there is a knack to flying. Although I never knew Grumpy, I know that he had that knack and he flew very far, and helped others to fly aswell.

Even when someone passes away, it does not mean they are altogether gone, they still live, in the people who knew them, and loved them.

This is a poem by me, dedicated to Grumpy.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I'm not there,
I did not die.
I'm in the Sun, the Moon and the stars.
The flowers waving to and fro in the breeze.
I'm the thousand winds,
The wispering trees,
The diamonds glints of snow in the grass.
I'm always,
I'm constant.
So please.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I'm not there,
I did not die.
My body may be gone,
But my spirit lingers on, the same,
Back in nature,
From where it came.

Rest in Peace Grumpy. We will all miss you and, from what I hear, your wonderful personality.

May the Angels welcome you!
I have never met Grumpy in person like many others here have but Emma's post broke my heart in so many ways. I love Grumpy's & Emma's mods so much and to find out that Grumpy is no longer with us shocked me. I lost my Mom and a sister to cancer, that accursed illness that seems to know no compassion or mercy. I am so utterly saddened by this, it's hard to express it in any way that does it justice.

Rest in Peace, dear Grumpy and thank you for everything. May the Angels welcome you to everlasting paradise and bliss.

With love and affection,
Saphyra

A new fan
I have only recently discovered this artist's body of work and I am saddened to hear of his passing. I admire the pains-taking attention to detail and the determination to bring new dimensions to his medium of choice.

I have installed most of the mods found here and plan to download the rest and enjoy them. Many thanks to you Emma for preserving and continuing this work.

Thank you Grumpy . . .
I have only recently learned of this wonderfull man's passing from this world, to a place I am sure in my heart that he will be loved and respected. If you have ever seen the movie, "What Dreams May Come", with Robbin Williams, then you know how I feel. Grumpy is even now roming over the vast and limitless expances of his own Morrowind, loved, respected and cherished. I'm sorry, I can't write any more . . . I am starting to cry . . . Love you . .

Farewell to Grumpy
I never knew Grumpy, only having found the online community several months after he died. I am very fond of the companion mods he made, and those he made with Emma, and am eternally grateful that he provided modders with a template from which they can make their own companions. I wish I had known him, but I am glad that at least I may know of him, that the Morrowind Community did not forget him. Grumpy, may you rest in peace.

Rest In Peace Grumpy
Having been away from the MW community for the past 9 months I was unaware of this great loss until today. I had the pleasure of corresponding with Grumpy when I was modding and was always amazed at his talents and if he didn't know how to do what I asked, he figured it out and taught me. I feel he made an impact on me in many ways and I will miss him. I knew of his illness but felt he would figure a way around it, just like he did with MW bugs. I am saddened this was one bug that won. Rest peacefully my friend and know your legacy will live on!

Very sad indeed
Its very sad to hear that Grumpy has died. I always found his mods excellent, but more importantly his manner on the forums was wonderful - a true great of the community, and a shattering loss.

Rest in peace
I wasn't aware that Grumpy had passed on, despite having downloaded mods based on what he had developed. This knowledge makes me feel sad.

Grumpy, even though I never knew you, reading the comments left by people that you have touched in some way makes me realize that you were a great person. Rest in peace, and maybe some day I'll get to meet you up there.

We'll miss u
Ok, only by reading the humorous readmes and other Grumpy's documents, even during the cancer period, you can see what a big heart... Oh, man, most of us never met you, but by just looking at our load lists and by reading your words, know that you'll live on in us all! You left something behind and share it with the whole world, I just hope I meet u someday up there... Peace.

I think Grumpy was one of the best modders ever. This is a very sad thing.

RIP
I've not seen this untill today, and reading over it confirms my initial belief that with grumpy we lost someone wonderfull.

I've not had the privilege of speaking to grumpy, but from everything I've seen about him and heard, and from the words he wrote himself, I have no doubt that he was something special.

I do not believe in any religion, but I'm certain those who deserve it, get their just reward after death.

My thoughts go out to his family and to you Emma, I know however that in our thoughts, Dennis will live on forever.

I only knew Grumpy by his great contributions to the Morrowind Modding community, but that doesn't make this any less tragic. I offer my condolences & profound respect of such an amazing person. Neither did I know this man or the works he created together. I wish you peace and sollace believing this wonderfull person is not gone but has moved on back to God.

This does not quell your pain , our pain , nor sadness as we all dance within the mortal world. Beyound that where our family, friends, heros await us ... know Grumpy would not wish you to grief but to take peace. Peace in reflecting and cherishing his gifts left behind.

Blessed be unto him, yourself, and everyone

Man...
Things like this are so tragic, in a community of people that are friends, or even family, all rung around a subject so great and then its dropped just so many levels with something like this. Grumpy, rest in peace, and have a great time modding the heavens. I never knew grumpy myself, but grumpy was an amazing modder, MW scripter, and probably a very great person. If only I could've met him would this be a bit better, to know that I knew someone so cool and legendary in this morrowind community.

It's so sad..
From the earliest MW modding times, over at morrowindfiles' scripting forum, I have had nothing but respect for Grumpy, as a fellow programmer. Thanks to his great work in the Companion scene, NPCs in Morrowind have far exceeded the expectations of Bethesda's designers.

His mods will live on. He can still get that kick when people play Morrowind and see the mark he made on that world.

You will not be forgotten. Who can say that, over the millions and zillions of people who have inhabited this Earth, and are inhabiting it, the memory of a peculiar individual will remain for a long time inside the heads of the living ? Us.
We will remember, and we will forever have better lives, because of you.
So thank you forever ( and thanks to Emma too, because of this page which always makes me cry )... Rest in peace. And may your memory be always a burning light that guides our inspiration.

Honor...
Honor, to one of the most notable figures in the Modding Community. My words come so late, I'm almost ashamed to only NOW be saying my goodbye four months after the fact. Like many members of the Morrowind community attest to, I was not close with Grumpy. But his passing has still affected me.

The pleasure of giving
Grumpy and I often talked about what was the joy in modding. We both agreed that more than anything else, it was the pleasure of giving, of being able to spread some joy. One day in january, when he was already ill, he said something I will never forget, and I saved that chat. For various reasons, I want to post it here as well.

These are his own words (previously posted in the memorial thread at Bethesda's forums) By his 'position' he is refering to his illness - the cancer that took his life on June 17th:

QUOTE
Grumpy: In a way, the individual is not as important as the masses. Think for a second of someone who is in my position and cant mod, but enjoys the game. We have improved that person's life. In a small way maybe, but we did it just the same...

That's the trophy... That's what makes it all worthwhile...

Biggest kick I get is when some "user" posts on the forums a "thank-you".

Whether they mention something you've done or not, it makes a difference.

Like the other day: There was a person who lost a mod and wanted it back. House mod in Balmora, and three of the responses mentioned Asgard. Not important that this individual was looking for that particular mod, but the fact that three people mentioned the mod was... to me anyway. I made somebody's life a little better.

Not by much... I understand that, but a little is better than nothing...

I did something to improve somebody's well-being...

Allbeit small...
/end quote

Of course, there were other things that mattered as well... I know how much Grumpy appreciated the many friends he made in the modding community. He had found a hobby that not only gave him a way to use his creativity and his brain, but also gave him many true friends.

I'm grateful that I was one of the persons that were blessed with his friendship.

- Emma

Hello Friend
Thank you for being an inspiration to others and giving me an opportunity to write. I believe with my heart that you are with us. It is uplifting to know that there are many selfless individuals like yourself who enjoy doing things to help others. The creativity and skill of Morrowind's modders are amazing, and your work certainly brought the characters to life. This game is like an alternate reality. Your contribution allowed players to have realistic companions, which is simply around the top of the list. You are among the legends.

A great loss
Although I never knew you and have only recently joined the modding community, your mods have been a great help in learning my way into scripting. I can say without doubt that Grumpy is the greatest scripting genius as far as companion mods go.

It is sad, alas you will live on.
I've been an avid MW player and modder for years. I have been a silent partner to many and never got the chance to work with you. Your mods are great and a true representation of who you were: an artist, a believer of many things and a writer. You will be missed, but never forgotten. To Grumpy, may your days in Heaven be blessed by peace in rest on Earth.

His Journey Has Just Begun
Don't think of him as gone away,
his journey has just begun.
Life holds so many facets,
this earth is only one.

Just think of him as resting,
from the sorrows and the tears,
in a place of warmth and comfort,
where there are no days and years.

Think of how he must be wishing
that we could know today,
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much

Goodbye Grumpy, you were a great friend, and a wonderful human being.

One shall only weep once,

He gave us gifts so many,
and got in return so few.

GOodbye.
Well, I can rememberback when I was younger, the age of 12. I just got Morrowind in the mail, GOTY edition. I was raring to play it the days before I recieved it, and the first thing I checked out were mods. And you, Grumpy, were the first modder I ever saw. Your mods have greatly impacted my work, and I thank you, Rest in Peace.

See you soon Grumpy... I mean later.
We all die one way or another, and in the end... the cause of death doesn't really matter. I'm not sad for Grumpy - His work will be continued and he will not be forgotten. Ever.

Morrowind till death us do part.

Find your Peace
I´ve enjoyed your work, and still do so. May you find peace in heaven. Maybe you can add a few mods to the place. If anyone could, it would be you

His Memory Will Live On
The greatest gift a person can give is Their Self.
I didn't have the privilege of knowing the man but I have had the privilege of seeing his work in "The Morrowind Mod's" and he has given me a great deal of pleasure in the game. He will surely be missed I'm sure not only for his artistic ability but as The Man also and what Greater Gift could anyone ask for!

Bye Grumpy
If there is a heaven, I believe you are there.
It is sad to see you go, but everyone will have their time. If "somehow" you can see this, then remember that noone ever has to accomplish anything in life except live it! You will always be remembered in some way or another, because our actions effect our world for eternity.

From Our Family to Yours
I never got the chance to know Grumpy, but from his work I know he was a true artist. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. Recently, we ourselves lost two loved ones, less than a year apart.

Best wishes Grumpy. You will be missed.

Pieces.
Grumpy, we never talked, and now, unfortunately, we never shall. But, I respected you greatly for your talents and believe everything Emma says about you and your kind-heartedness.

Rest in peace, man. Rest in peace.

Thank you Grumpy
I never talked to him in person, or through email. I have seen his work and know he was a talented person. I have read Emma's comments, and know he was a good person who will be missed by those who knew him best.

Some might think something that seems so trivial is not important, but if you lift the spirits of those around you, you are doing more then your fair share.

People like Grumpy let me continue to believe in the good in the world

He will be missed, but let his selflessness serve as a model for others.

Sorrow is not a strong enough word.
I take a break from the online community and when I return I discover the loss of one of the greats. I had the honor of trading a few e-mails with Grumpy, and have to say of all the people I have met because of Morrowind, he was one of the greats. Always offering help and advise. I don't think I've ever heard a negative word from him or about him.
To his friends and family my heart goes out to you.
To Emma, I wish I was around in June to offer my support, but now all I can do is send my love and condolences and pray that it is enough.
